Knee Pain Solutions

Knee Pain Causes

Many people suffer from knee pain from at one time or another.  Whether you are an avid athlete, a weekend adventurer, or a sofa sitter, you may experience knee pain for different reasons.  Many times, the pain is not caused from problems in the knee itself, but from problems in the leg, hip or spinal region. Whatever the cause of you knee pain, an evaluation and treatment by an experienced Massage Therapist and/or Chiropractic Doctor may be the solution to your problems.

Reasons Knee Pain Develops

Knee-Pain-has-many-Causes

Knee Pain has many Causes

When considering knee pain, the person needs to be looked at as a whole unit.  Often times, the knee itself become the focus, but important factors about the way a person walks (your gait), lifestyle, and history play an important role in finding the cause, and ultimately the solution to the problem.

1. Tight muscles in the hamstrings, quadriceps or Illeotibial (IT) Band, influence the tracking of your knee joint.  The unbalanced tension of a tight muscle group can pull the knee so it tracks slightly to one side or the other.  Click here to learn more about IT Band tightness and knee pain. This misalignment in the knee joint, even if very slight, causes tension in the joint which can lead to pain.

2. Misalignments in the hips and pelvic area also contribute to developing knee pain.  These misalignments may be due to muscles tension and imbalances coming from the hip joint or pelvis area.  These imbalances throw off your gait and lead to increased pressure in the knee joint.

3. Spinal misalignment from trauma, accidents or tight muscles also affect you knee. Spinal misalignments may be causing the muscles in the back, hips and buttocks to tighten up.  This causes imbalances in your gait, thus affecting the pressure in your knee.

Keep it in your glove box. It will tell you what to do after an auto accident.

If you are in an auto accident it is important to know what to do afterwards. I am speaking from first hand experience having been injured in several collisions over the years.

What you do after a crash, even if it is just a fender bender, influences whether you will make a full recovery or suffer from chronic pain.

Massage Therapy Relaxation

Great Vacation…Close to Home

Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but unfortunately we are not always able to control what life brings us.  Busy work schedules, office deadlines and home obligations can leave us feeling stressed out and tired.  Sometimes we need a break from it all, but don’t have the time or energy to get away. Well, I have great news for you!!  Relaxation is closer than you think. Relaxation massage therapy is perfect for you!

Relaxation Massage Therapy

massage-therapy-relieves-your-tension

Massage Therapy Relieves Your Tension

Receiving a therapeutic body massage helps to lower stress and cortisol levels, release tension and relax your muscles.  Whether you come in for a 60 or 90 minute session, you will leave feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and less stressed.  Massage therapy works on your body by releasing tension that is stored in your muscles, leaving them more limber and pliable.  Massage therapy also works on your mind at a chemical level by telling your brain to release certain hormones that relieve stress.

Massage Therapy Relieves Tension

Trigger points often found in your upper back and neck area also hold tension and stress.  Having these tight and tender “knots” released through massage melts away tension.  I also offer Hot Stone Massage as another tool to relax the muscles. Through the application of heated stones and pressure, I use these stones as a tool in my hand to comfortably penetrate deeper into the muscle layers to relieve deep stored spasms and stress. This leaves your body and mind in a state or relaxation.

If you haven’t experienced the benefits of massage by me or anyone else, now is a great opportunity to give it a try.  I am offering ($10 off to all new clients ($60/ 60 minutes or $90 for 90 minutes.)  And, if you are an existing client of mine, you will receive this same discount just by mentioning that you read my offer from my blog post.  Massage must be booked by the end of July and is good  through August 12th.

Call our office at 781-829-9300 to schedule an appointment for yourself and take your next vacation……. on my massage table!

Golfers Massage

Massage Helps Golfers

Golf is becoming one of the most popular sports in the world.  Once thought to be more of a mental game, many golfers are finding that being in better physical shape with strong core muscles in your neck, back, and hips, equates to less injuries and improved scores! Now more and more golfers are receiving a Golfers Massage before or after their round to help improve their game and improve posture and flexibility.

Golfers Massage “Hot Spots”

golfers-massage-for-pain-relief

Golfers Massage for Pain Relief

Common places were golfers experience pain is around the head, neck and low back. This can occur from tightening up during your golf swing and hitting the ball too hard.  Other areas where soreness and inflammation can develop is between the shoulder blades as well as your hands, forearms and the muscles of the rotator cuff  from gripping and swinging the club.  Since the twisting motion from swinging the golf club uses many of the muscles in the upper body, areas in the back along the spine and throughout the hips, glutes and hamstrings can also become sore and tight.

The Golfers Massage Full Treatment

When I work with you as a golfer, I always asses the “hot spots” for tenderness and inflammation.  My massage sessions for a Golfers Massage typically involves deep tissue work that targets your problem areas.  I also include trigger point work and passive stretching, as well as further focusing on the scapula area, low back, pelvic and hip regions. Lean more here about Golfers Massage.

Many golfers have found that incorporating massage therapy sessions during the busy golf season improves flexibility which helps to minimize injury.  The number one reason why people play golf is for relaxation.  It can be a great stress reducer and time to socialize.  Of course, playing a competitive game and staying out of pain are very important to the enjoyment of the game.  If you are a golfer experiencing pain from the game, you can call our office to schedule a Golfers Massage for yourself.

Sports Massage Benefits

What is a Sports Massage?

Sports-Massage-is-Pain-Relief

Sports Massage is Pain Relief

Are you an athlete looking for ways to help your body achieve more?  A sports massage may give you that extra athletic edge and help you achieve your goals. Sports massage therapy’s main purpose is to help alleviate stress and tension which build up in your soft tissues as a result of physical activity.

Athletes often endure minor injuries in the soft tissue due to overexertion and overuse.  A sports massage can help you break down these lesions more quickly.  In doing this, it will prepare you for peak performance by helping to reduce fatigue, relieve swelling and decrease muscle tension.  Sports massage will also help you promote flexibility which will help prevent injures.

Different Techniques for Different Sports

Every sport uses different muscle groups in different ways.  A sport massage is designed to address those specific muscles groups aiming to heal your strained muscles and allow your healthy muscles to reach their peak performance.  The result will be you will have improved performance with minimized risk of injury. For example if you are a runner I would likely include focus work on your calf muscles, hamstrings and buttock muscles while if you are a golfer you will need focus on the hips, low back and shoulders.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports-Massage-is-Pain-Relief

Sports Massage is Pain Relief

Sports massage therapy can include pre-event, post-event and maintenance techniques, each having numerous benefits for you.  As in a typical massage, you experience reduction in heart rate, blood pressure and stress, as well as feeling better and more relaxed.  I add focus to specific muscle groups that are used for your specific sport.  Blood circulation is increased to the muscles which promotes faster healing to strained and injured muscles.  Your flexibility is improved which minimizes your risk for injury. Pain is also reduced allowing you to continue to train, as well as promote greater athletic performance and endurance. This can be beneficial for athletes of all abilities and levels.  Click here to learn more about Sports Massage Therapy.

In addition to a traditional sports massage, I also incorporate hot stones into my massages.  The heated stones penetrate deep into the muscle layers, improving circulation even more and promote your muscle healing.

Pinched Nerve Signs

a-pinched-nerve-can-cause-pain-in-your-arm

A Pinched Nerve can Cause Pain in Your Arm

Sometimes pain can sneak up on you. One day your feeling fine, then the next day you have pain shooting out of your neck into your shoulder and down your arm. You could have a burning pain in your shoulder blade or numbness and tingling in your hand also. If you have pain like this you may be suffering from what is commonly referred to as a pinched nerve. A pinched nerve can cause pain just about anywhere in your body, but most people refer to this term when they have pain in their arm or leg.

Pinched Nerve Symptoms

  • Burning or sharp pain into your arm or leg
  • Pain that travels from your neck or back
  • A pinching sensation when you turn your neck
  • A sharp jolt when you twist your back
  • Pain that has you very distracted
  • Pain in your shoulder blade or buttock
  • Numbness/ tingling in your arm or leg
  • Pain over your ear, into your face or jaw
  • Headaches can also be from a pinched nerve

Pinched Nerve Secrets

The term pinched nerve to describe your pain is more of a layman’s term, and is generally not 100% accurate. Most people with these symptoms, actually just have nerve irritation or inflammation. Calling it pinched is more for simplification and ease of understanding. Although direct nerve pinching can and does happen, such as in the cases of a herniated disc, bone spurs, arthritis, and spinal stenosis, this is not always the case. Click here to read more on Pinched Nerve at WebMD.

Pinched Nerve Causes

  • Stress and anxiety
  • A sudden jerk or twist
  • Sleeping wrong
  • Sleeping with a fan or A/C blowing on you
  • Auto accidents
  • Spinal Misalignment
  • Muscle spasms
  • Excess inflammation
  • Work injury
  • Bulging discs, herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease

Pinched Nerve Treatment

If you have a pinched nerve, you should seek the following treatments.

  • Apply ice to your neck or back
  • Perform some gentle movements and light stretches
  • Sleep with a soft thin pillow under your neck
  • Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees
  • Use a lumbar support in your car
  • Take breaks from sitting and standing for long periods
  • Take some fish oil for your inflammation reduction
  • Have a chiropractic alignment
  • Seek soft tissue therapy
  • Have a massage therapist work on your muscles

We offer help with all of the above treatments for your pinched nerve needs in our Hanover Chiropractic and Massage Therapy Office. If you would like additional information on how to resolve a pinched nerve, please call our office at 781-829-9300. We would be happy to answer any questions for you, or schedule you for an exam or consultation.
